Remember Baloo the bear from the Jungle Book? Well we are going to get down to the “bear” necessities of mirroring and more. Mirroring can be an integral part of your high availability and disaster recovery planning. We’ll cover what mirroring is, how it can fit into an HA/DR plan, the rules surrounding its use, configuration via the GUI and T-SQL, as well as how to monitor mirroring. This presentation is designed to not only give you an overview of mirroring, but to also walk you through a basic implementation. At the end you will have learned what mirroring is, how it can fit into your environment, what business requirements it solves, and how to configure it.

EDMPASS July 2011 - LiveMeeting Presentation Recording

On July 27th EDMPASS was lucky enough to have Jen McCown (@MidnightDBA) as a guest (virtual) speaker.

Here is the session abstract: Unraveling Tangled Code - A Spellbinding Tale of Victory Over Chaos

Once upon a time, you inherited an application or a database that was filled with chaos and inconsistencies. The T-SQL code is overly complex and impossible to ken. The architecture is painful to behold, and grueling to code for. One might optimistically say that query performance is “spectacularly mediocre”. If you’re without good documentation or system architects to guide you, how do you break the curse of confusion? In this session you’ll learn several methods for conquering chaotic code, and how to seek and destroy some of the nastier coding mistakes and inefficiencies. We will break complicated queries into key pieces, turn them upside-down, and reform them into something sensible. We will vanquish major issues like data abuse and index negligence. We will restructure joins, tame subqueries, and refactor dynamic SQL. We will emerge victorious!

If you were unable to attend the Live Meeting session here is a recording of the presentation.

Big thanks to Jen for doing this for us and if you are a SQL Server presenter and have interest in doing a Live Meeting session for EDMPASS please feel free to contact me.

Session Abstract:

Integration Services is a complex system of parallelism and in-memory buffers. Determining what parts of your package are causing sub-par performance requires some specific techniques. Before you apply any “top ten” performance enhancements, you need to identify where the issue is - or you’ll be wasting your time. Learn what tools are available for monitoring and diagnosing poor performance in SSIS packages and how to apply them. Dive in to the only way to diagnose Data Flow bottlenecks - decomposition - and how to effectively address the most common causes.

Topic: Solving Business Pains with SQL Server Integration Services

Session Abstract:

SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) offers a wide range of features and functionality that can be used to solve business pains within Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) processes.  These pains can be caused by the performance of current ETL process, the maintainability of ETL processes or represent a new pain that SSIS features can resolve.  This presentation will provide a demonstration of real world scenarios where features of SSIS were used to solve business pains through modification of existing SSIS packages or through the creation of new SSIS packages.  The session will also discuss current best practices in SSIS package design.
